Diabetes is a chronic disease where the blood sugar levels are too high. Diabetes may be caused by having too little insulin or a resistance to insulin. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is often referred to as “childhood diabetes” and is most often diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults. However, type 1 diabetes may occur in people of any age. This type of diabetes results when the pancreas does not make enough insulin and the diabetic needs daily injections of insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type and is often referred to as “adult onset diabetes” since it is most often diagnosed in adulthood. However, due to the high obesity rates, more children and teens are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
